Several more notes for the good of mankind
The Importance of Being Earnest Show Notes
5.5.2011
Cecily- We now have a new cake that isn't like a brick. However, you'll have to cut it yourself during the show.
ACT ONE
Lane- only look in the direction Algernon is, not both directions
Algy 1.5- sounded like gut rather than cut
Algy, enunciate in general- don't mush your words together
Algy- don't talk with your mouth full!
Jack - you sound rather monotone while you are asking who is coming to tea
Algy- "essence of romance is all over" ?
Algy 3.8- you cut Jack off. Look over the lines again to see where his lines end and yours begin.
Everyone- lines, lines, LINES.
Jack- careful of how you are sitting around "rather mean of you Earnest", your knees should be together
Algy 4.6 said line wrong
Jack 4.13- we're not sure, but you may have been cut off by Algy
Algy 5.1 ENUNCIATE. We couldn't understand a single word.
Algy 5.5- you left out "who lives in Tunbridge wells"
Jack 5.8 you left out bunburyist
Jack 5.12- you left out "my dear fellow"
Jack 6.8- the line is "what on earth do you mean?"
Jack -don't eat off of the bare surface of the table- if you grab a piece of bread and butter, hold it in your hand until you are done
General note- cues are really slow tonight
Algy 6.13 missed the end of the line
Algy 7.2 you just messed up the line- good try on covering for it
Jack 7.5 you added absurd
Better reactions tonight over the cucumber sandwiches
LB, Don't throw away the line of "gold for grief"!!!
Jack - the small hand gestures like walking are ok- don't just offer your hand out for her to take.
LB, 9.6 left out a few sentences here and there
Jack -use good posture~ Sit up straight, not hunchbacked
Jack- it's a little awkward when you touch Gwen's shoulder during the "since I met you" line.
Jack- watch your physicalization when sitting- you sit with knees apart, hunched over, every once in a while.
Gwen- act more surprised when he actually proposes
LB "fruit", not "flower" 12.17
Jack- 13.5- you said "believe" early
Jack 13.9- you switched the order of your sentences
Jack - how do you feel about having been found? how has it affected you? how do suppose she is going to take the news?
Jack 14.10- missed the last sentence- may have been a cut off by LB
LB-15.1 "one parent of either sex"- you also mixed up a fw of the phrases
Jack-play up the realization that you've just bad-mouthed his family and you're very contrite now
Algy 16.2 "civilized" not modern.
Jack 16.3- you added "in paris" to the last sentence
Jack - be careful not to abuse the pocket watch. It's a loan to the department, and makes the most dreadful noise when you bang your hand against it.
Jack -we need to see more of the fact tha your dreams have just been crushed by Lady Bracknell.
Algy 18.15- did you forget your line? You need to be saying you lines while he pours the sherry!!!
ACT TWO
Lights- lights need to be all the way of when the act opens
Bati- project! your voice is getting lost in the theater- and Prism, being louder, begins to seem much more important
Ceci, 22.14 we didn't hear 'park'
Cues- pick up the cues, everyone!
Algy- the line is "if you don't mind, you could make that your mission" (or something rather close to that… sorry, didn't have the script at the moment I wrote this)
Prism- good touch with "fruits?"
Dc- we liked "any occasion"
Costume- Chasuble's tie?
DC- you said own instead of outlying
Algy, an audience member remarked "I couldn't understand a word Algernon said." to Mr. Pereenboom.
Algy 29.7- you missed the phrase "I expected a more enthusiastic welcome."
Merriman- slow down, articulate, 29.21. MERRIMAN WEAR BLACK SOCKS NOT WHITE.
Jack- careful of physicalization- your body says "stay as long as you want", but your lines say "Get the &%^ out of my Garden."
Ceci, 31.1 Mixed up the sentences
Merriman- you should enter a little sooner so that you are in place when you say the dogcart is at the door.
Algy, you are definitely enjoying the character more, having more fun, and that's reading! Hoorah!
Algy- "wildly, passionately, devotedly, hopelessly"- we lost the last two words
Merriman- Enter, then say your lines
Ceci- you forgot "of course it was" over the broke off engagement
Algy 33.15- "my dear child" not "my own darling"
Girls, synchronize the sigh- but other than that, the timing on the silence was wonderful!
Merriman- the plate state should be placed at the BACK of the table, not the front. The tea set must be closer to the girls so that it can be easily accessed by Bati. Also, Natalie needs the table space to put her plate down.
Gwendolen- you wouldn't put your arm around his shoulder- you would, however, put it around his waist
Gentleman- careful not to look too smug and happy during this- you haven't the foggiest whether these gores will ever forgive you for your deception.
Jack 40.2- got a bit muddled at the end
Jack- don't wipe your nose on your shirt sleeve. Also, you looked comfortable- you are highly agitated. Work on the physicalization for Saturday.
Algy 41.2 "thoroughly EXPERIENCED" not "educated"
Algy- don't fix the plate stand during the act unless you can talk at the same time. Kudos for noticing it was titling.
Merriman- the plate stand needs to be positioned in such a way that it won't fall over.
Jack- you've got o go for the muffins, or Algy's line doesn't make sense.
Both of you, REVIEW YOUR LINES
DO NOT MOVE ONCE THE LIGHTS BEGIN TO GO OUT
ACT THREE
Natlaie, watt until you are past the border to begin saying your line. We lost the first few words of the first line
Algy and Jack- synchronize the whistle, if possible
Ceci, 40.14 you said "there one question I would like to put to you" the line is "Would you kindly answer me the following question
Jack- careful of upstaging Algy! Do not step forward past him.
Bati- pause for laughs
Comic three- work on it for Saturday
Lady Bracknell- don't smile.
Algy 47.8- we could understand nothing between Cecily and possibilities
Clarence- BE more EXCITED! at her allowing you to marry
DC- "pew owner" should be "pew opener"
Good job on having the bag open!!!
LB- that glare at Jack when he says "I hate to seem inquisitive" was perfect!
Jack 53.7- it's irrevocable, not unalterable
LB we really want to se you cringe when he says Aunt Augusta- Jack, you've got to call her Aunt very purposefully.
Jack- your physiclization should show us that you are very anxious about finding out your names rather than being casual
LB- you could probably look them in interest while they look for the name, then look away in disdain when he says it.
Jack 54.10- my own one vs. Darling
Laetitia needs to come sooner, DC. Full tilt to the end!

Act Two
Truett, enunciate- "cannot be quite well" got a little muddled

Andi, nice reaction when Truett mentions doctor chasuble
Andi 22.12- you didn't say the second half of the line
Miles, good job with the twirling bees- but it's a little too expressive. Just tone down the movement.
Andi, tone down your acting a bit- we like it though!
Andi, we like your subtext on "too sensational"
Truett- make sure you are reading it- don't show us that there is nothing on either side
Truett- play with "wicked" "hypocrisy" "enjoyable at the time"- but don't start away from him as if you were afraid
Miles - pronounce everything!!!
Miles 26.21- you missed "indeed"
Miles- "drafts", not drouts"
Miles 27.3- you mixed up some of the words

Kevin 28.3- "if that would suit you", not "if that would do"
Cecily- take a pause between "who do you think" and "your brother"
Kevin, good reaction when you see Algy
Kevin- when you said "Merriman" we heard "Merlin"
Kevin 30.20- you mixed up a few words.
Also, you skipped 30.18 (Kevin) and 30.19(Adam)
Truett, enunciate!
Adam, 31.18- you said the words in the wrong order and added wholesomely
Ross, look more annoyed that you have to go back and unpack the dogcart
Truett 33. 12- you said but instead of besides
Adam, 33.19- you just mixed up some of the words
Adam, nice exit. You hastened.
Truett, seem more surprised at Gwendolen's appearance- you expect her to be a much older woman
Truett, make a visible "thank goodness" when the awkward silence ends
Amanda, don't laugh with the audience if you mess up and drop your parasol
Truett- you said "reproach it with him"
Merriman- take any things off of the table- don't just lay the tablecloth and tea things over them.
Cecily- it would be ok to start with one, two, and them just shovel some in for the sugar
Amanda, it will be okay for you to have disdain in your voice when you say "cake"
Amanda, don't allow him to put his arm around your waist until you say "you may"
Adam, remember not to look at Amanda until she is pointed out to you by Truett
Everyone, warm up your mouths and voices before you get on stage.
Adam and Kevin- keep straight who goes where. Country vs. Town
Keep on top of your cues, everyone!
Kevin, we liked the defensive posturing at "no business of yours"
Adam- not so much coughing.
Lights- why did the lights go out in the middle of the scene?
Put the remaining muffin in your mouth, Adam
Guys, don't move until lights are entirely out.
Props- we need to have real english muffins for tomorrow
Make the awkward pause even longer- unison sigh of awkwardness would be acceptable
Matt- make sure the tea set is perfect\
Bati, look the tea "thank goodness its here"
Bati- don't laugh at Natalie's outrageous and hilarious conduct
Act Three
Clarence, pronounce all the consonants!!!!
Clarence- try not to be almost bent double when you run to Cecily
Clarence, make sure you don't start cutting others lines off
LB, better intensity, but give us MORE
Clarence- if Bracknell gives the parasol to the wrong man, don't make it obvious she was supposed to hand it to you instead
LB- good job keeping the number of Markby's consistent! He said four, you said four!
Nice touch with the hand clutching the parasol in annoyance, Corey
Cues- don't leave long gaps between lines, especially ones where the previous speaker has just spoken your name.
Jack 48.11 "I suspect him of being untruthful", not "I think he's untruthful"
Jack- "Perrier Jouet"
Everyone, play up the little thank you party excluding Jack, so he can play up how he feels about his being left out and ignored.
DC- "heretical" enunciate
LB- we want to see that you've had it with the engagements and now christenings
Bati- don't laugh on stage
LB- you've been looking for Prism for twenty years- we need to see your pent up anger, frustration, and indignance.
Jack, careful off looking very depressed versus highly excited.
DC- we liked the way you and prism looked at the bag- we want a bigger reaction from you over the news that he was the baby in the bag, and Jack's assumption that Prism must be his mum.
Jack 53.4- you stubbled over "you will have to treat me with more respect"
Jack- we need a sense that you are going crazy with the news- right now we can see you going 1,2,3, now I talk to Algy
Corey, more energy! You've just gotten a brother, relatives, and know who you are. You're going through the roof with contained energy
Jack- take a little bit for the book searching for the page rather than having it be the first one.
LB, bigger reaction to finding out this man you don't like is related to you

NOTES!!!!!!! :)
The Importance of Being Earnest Performance Notes
4.29.2011
Actors- the way to read the note is Actor name-page number.line number. Line number means lines down the page- not just actor lines down the page. So, Jack 5.8 refers to the line on page five, "Bunburyist? What on earth do you mean by a Bunburyist?". Jack says it, it's on page five, and it's the eighth line from the top.
Act One
Ross, good job holding the plate stand steady!
Lane- can we see more of the reason you put the plate under the table? We got a sense you were putting it under for some reason, but we didn't get that you were doing it to make sure Algy didn't eat it.
Lane, You hid the sandwiches- so why'd you sound so happy to give them to the man you know i only going to eat them and blame you for their absence?
Algy- you kept petting your shoe- was it scuffed? It drew attention and made us wonder what was wrong with them rather than listening to you.
Algernon- articulate, articulate, articulate!
Tech- the masking needs to cover the trees for act three. they are popping out from behind the curtains
Algernon- thank you for pausing for laughs
Jack-5.8
Jack, skipped from 5.13 to 6.4. LOOK OVER THIS SCENE AGAIN. BOTH OF YOU. The rest of the play is hard to make sense of if we don't know what relation Cecily is to Jack- and that happens to be what you missed.
Algernon 6.13
Jack be careful of cutting algernon's lines off- every once in awhile you would cut in before he finished and part of the line was lost.
Algernon have a bolder fake realization that there are no cucumber sandwiches
Lady Bracknell, be careful of taking to many dramatic pauses
Clarence enunciate your lines, we are losing some words
Tech, when we first start the show try to expose more of the border
Nick, be careful of the blooping sounds
Jack pause for laughs especially with gwendolen
Gwendolen Great physicalization, as always!
Lady Bracknell- good reaction to the proposal
Jack, take a quick pause before you admit you smoke so you can think about whether you should tell her or not.
Jack, you need to enunciate at all times we lost "who"
Jack have a later and bolder realization at "you don't suppose Gwen will be like her mother in about 150 years?"
Jack, be more upset about not being able to marry Gwendolen, right now it looks like your are saying "whatever, no biggy"
Jack stop reclining away from algernon, it looks like you are hiding from him
Algernon pause for laughs!
Algernon, talk slower. You are tripping over your own words, so we cannot understand some of them, and others are lost entirely.
Jack talk to us not the back of the stage, or we won't be able to hear a word you say!
Act Two
Cecily enunciate
Hair, Prism's hair look good
Chasuble don't cut prism off- make sure she gets the full line out before you begin yours.
Cecily don't say your horrid line till you sit down
Matt, black socks and, LOUDER LOUDER LOUDER
Ross and Matt, please practice with the curtains
Hunter, are you going to be our footman tomorrow night? Have you tried on Matt's suit?
Jack, great fake mourning. Very good acting here.
Chasuble 27.5,you forgot the words and then said other mostly nonsensical words far too quickly.
Jack say "it would be childish" louder.
Jack the bottom of your jacket looks dusty, talk to costume crew or don't put your jacket on the ground
Prism, be prepared to pause for laughs
Jack good disgusted face when you shake hands with algernon
Jack good release of the hand shake
Jack good pouty quality you are putting into your lines- we feel what you feel
Algernon, wait a few more seconds to realize that Cecily is there
Matt, enter a few seconds sooner to say the dogcart is there- they (Algy and Cecily) were left staring at each other with nothing to say for a short time.
Matt, act more annoyed that you have to re pack the luggage and annoyed you have to tell the dog cart to wait
Cecily, you missed "but I forgave you by the week was out"
Algernon you skipped a few lines on page 33 when you tried to cover for her forgotten line. Both of you need to glance over this scene once again to make sure you can cover without the awkward, dragging silence and skip down the page.
Algernon you said "couldn't you love if my name was Earnest." you should have said Algernon
Cecily, not impeStuous, it should be impetuous
Gwendolen and Cecily, play with a little awkwardness when you sit down after first meeting
Hair, Gwendolen's hair looked lopsided
Matt, make sure the table cloth is straight, it need up crooked, with more clothe on the left side than the right.
Matt, set up the table so the tea and sugar can be easily reach by Cecily, since she is the one who must serve the food. I suggest putting the plate stand in the back of the table, centered, and then arranging the tea things symmetrically in front of it so both girls have easy access to all the implements and room for a teacup.
Cecily, put one thing of sugar in Gwendolen's cup then look at her and put in more
Gwendolen separate the moment
Algernon, don't look at Gwendolen until good heavens gwendolen line- you need to pretend you haven't noticed her until that point.
Jack PROJECT!!!!!
Gwendolen and Cecily, the stop, look, and continue storming off is really funny
Jack Posture- stand tall in your own family.
Jack and Algernon, the I love her, I adore her worked well
Jack don't cut algernon off
Jack don't talk until you eat. and remember, also don't talk while you eat.
Jack and ALgernon no ghetto women head bobble things, it is leaning towards that
Jack your physicalization looks a little off- you seem scared of Algy, in your own garden. You aren't scared, your annoyed. VERY annoyed. And feeling as if it's all rather a mess and seemingly hopeless.
Act Three
Gwendolen and Cecily you are still storming off when the act begins
Jack don't block Algernon at the beginning of the act
Algernon, don't let Jack upstage you
Algernon 46.2 you forgot you line
Lady Bracknell good cover
Jakc grand daughter sounded like granduler
Lady Bracknelll don't say uh
Jack 48.13 you said yesterday instead of this afternoon
CHasuble you need to pick up cues, good entrance though
Chasuble refuted not refufed
Lady bracknell, bolder physicalization when you realize that he said prism
Lady Bracknell, you forgot to say prism the second time in " Prism, Prism where is that baby"
Lady bracknell 52.8 you missed half the line
Props THANK YOU SO MUCH for opening th eland bag
Prism push off Jack from hugging you
Jack when you are talking about women being chasised talke to everybody not prism
Jack faster more energy with Algernon being your brother
Jack, make a deliberate choice to call LB Aunt Augusta
Jack pronounce the Army lists
Jack don't move until the lights are completely out.
Thursday, April 28, 2011
Notes, again
The Importance of Being Earnest Opening Night Notes
4.28.2011
Act One
Nick- someone left a black stage chair sitting in the audience- it doesn't really matter, but it is placed in what should be a handicapped seat.
Actors who have difficult hair, please remember magic time starts at seven- so you need to arrive however early it'll take for your hair to be ready by then!
Lane- make sure to be center stage for the silhouette- right behind the teacart
Lane, you are just supposed to put the plate below, not the whole stand.
Matt, enunciate and project
Costume- does Algy have a tie of any kind during the first scene?
Jack 2.12 - get the lines right now, it's the real deal!
Good timing Jack on eating the sandwiches
Adam and Kevin, DO NOT talk with your mouth full- a gentleman would never do that.
Lane, you should be wearing black socks, NOT WHITE.
Jack 4.9
Algy, why are you crossing to a place you were never supposed to cross to?- remember your blocking. You cannot go into the blue lighted areas. EVER. (this happened during the Cecily argument
Algy- "poof' vs. "proof. Don't soften the r's so far they disappear entirely
Jack, enunciate "dentists" we lost it.
Algy, you would never put your teacup straight down on the surface of the table- put it on the saucer!
Jack- we could't quite understand "kill my brother"
Jack 7.7
Sound- where was the doorbell????
Algy - proposing didn't sound like proposing. Tighten up your pronunciations
Nice scene between Lane and Algernon- the "thank you" is perfect
Jack, body language- crossing your legs away from Gwen is a sign that you are not attracted to her- since you are flirting, I assume you are attracted and should cross your legs towards her
LB 9.6
Jack- we still love the stutter when you first talk to Gwen after LB and Algy leave
Jack- we couldn't hear all of "happy" in "darling, you don't know how happy you've made me"- sounded more like "appy".
Gwen- don't fidget with the bag during the scene- even if it is falling off your shoulder, you'll catch it with the crook of your arm anyways.
Jack, you need to wait until LB says rise before you do.
Lady Bracknell, deepen the register- it will make you seem older and more aristocratic!
LB, add more subtext behind your lines- yours are longer, so the more feeling behind them, the more likely you'll not lose the audiences' attention.
LB, 13.4
Jack 13.5
LB and Jack- your interrogation scene is going much better tonight!
Jack 13.17
Jack 14.2- really look this one over! It's never been quite right for either cast!
Jack 14.4
LB- you wouldn't find his decryption of his origins at all amusing- you are building to storming out.
Jack 14.8
Costumes- LB should have gloves to put back on at the end of the interrogation of Jack
LB 14.13
Jack 14.14
Lady Bracknell- pause for laughs! Comedic Timing! Don't talk over laughter- you'll lose your lines
Algy, be careful of a broad A in has
Algy- good use of Jack's "things" against him
Jack 15.12
Guys, cover when you forget your lines! Algy, good cover for Jack's mistake- Jack, look over your lines!
Jack 16.1
Jack 16.9
You missed the line about Gwen turning into her mother in about 150 years- go over your scripts!
Jack 16.13
Props- there should be a white cloth on the tea cart's handle.
Jack 17.1
Jack we almost lost "weren't"- enunciate!
Reminder note JACK- You are upset, you wouldn't be smiling at Algy when you say "nothing"!
Note for Truett- Mr. P thought you were going to bring a small journal for Gwen.
MATT AND ROSS practice the curtains! and Matt, do not cross the stage- just go off the side closest to your curtain!
Act Two
Good job, guys, with tying back the curtains. Matt- DO NOT CROSS THE STAGE.
Prism- project a bit more!
Cecily 21.4
Truett- slow down your lines. We cannot keep up with your mouth- thus the meaning behind the lines is mostly if not entirely lost on the audience.
Truett- if you are going to be speedy and speak in a high note- you have to do it all the time- although that would not be the most understandable way to speak
DC- 23.7- we lost "unfortunate young man his brother"
Cecily- the W stands for West in Earnest's address.
Cecily 23.17
Cecily 24.16 You are speaking so fast your words are running over each other. SLOW down as much as you think you should- and then slow it down some more
Cecily- don't talk towards the back of the stage- we cannot hear you if you talk to the back wall
We lost "I shouldn't know what to talk to him about" ENTIRELY, Cecily.
Everyone- be aware of the laughs. Do not attempt to speak through the laughs- they will usually drown you out,a dn if you do manage to talk through, the audience will be subconsciously annoyed that they weren't allowed to laugh as much as they wanted to.
Jack, when you say 'dead' MAKE IT DRAMATIC!!!!
Jack 26.20
DC, you're A's are very american- make the british ah sound.
Jack, play up the mourning over the dead imaginary brother
DC, 27.5
Dc, good character work!!!!
Jack 27.6
Jack -what? We lost the line following prism's thrift line.
Costumes- can we get Jack a pair of solid colored shoes? His are highly noticeable, and do not match his costume or character
DC 28.4
Algy, you upstaged Cecily when you came in. Cecily, you need to be aware of your visibility to the audience and react to the actors around you accordingly.
Cecily, don't cut off Jack in the middle of his lines.
Guys, better on the handshake tonight
Prism, we like your quirky character choices
Jack 29.18
Merriman- nice reaction of "now I have to pack it all up again" - but can you give us MORE?
Algy 30.4
Jack 30.20
Trueett, enunciate. We cannot understand half of your lines.
Merriman- give us a reaction of "now I have to unload it AGAIN" when Algy tells you to bring the dogcart around same time next week.
Truett- don't talk over the laughs- we lost your lines when you did try to do so.
Algy- just because you got a laugh, don't keep falling! You'll hurt yourself that way!
Also, it isn't very Algernon like to go running off in a panic- he's too cool, too composed for that.
Cecily, you mixed up 35.2 and 35,4.
Sound- no messing about in the back during the show
Gwen- it's candor not candid in your line
Ceci- add more sugar- we should see a thing about adding lots of sugar- make it dramatic. We'll buy more if we run out.
Ceci- make a deal about cutting the cake with the knife, but put it on the plate angrily with your hand.
Ceci - we heard Algernon Creiff. Say his name quite clearly.
Jack 39.19
Gwen 40.1
Jack 40.17
Jack 41.9
Algy- you need to go for the muffins a bit sooner!
Algy 41.14
Jack 42.3
Algy- 42.10- good cover though, for your memory slip
Act Three
Truett, don't block Gwen when you enter- she's talking ,s o her voice needs a clear path to the audience
Merriman, good reaction to the hugging
good comic three
LB- increase the energy! You need to be more p.o.'d
Good reaction to news of Bunbury's death, Truett!
LB- ENERGY. Do not speak your lines in a monotone, if you aren't enjoying yourself, we aren't enjoying watching you.
LB 46.5
Algy and Ceci- review your blocking. We believe you should be standing a step or two stage left to where you were during the scene where Brackenll's starting her interrogation of Ceci's past
Jack 46.12
LB- check your pocket watch when you say "the time approaches for our departure"
Jack, don't hold the parasol like a weapon towards LB's face- you are still first and foremost a gentleman, and she a lady. Thus, you only threaten each other through words and innuendo, and not through physical means
LB, act more money hungry- you only like Ceci because you found out she's absolutely loaded.
What is the story behind your marriage, LB? Think of one- because right now, you seem to be spewing lines for no reason other than Oscar Wilde wrote them, and that means you've got to say them.
Jack 48.9
Jack 48.13- also, come to Margo or Pereenboom about the pronunciation of the wine
Good interruption, Jack! You definitely cut LB off.
Jack 49.4 LB, good cover for his jump forward in the script!
DC- good entrance!!!
DC- 50.5
DC 50.8- Mr. Worthing isn't the first set of words- that's really only a small mistake in subject placement, though.
DC- when LB says Prism stop IMMEDIATELY
DC- take care not to be upstaged by LB when she stands center stage.
Prism- be more offended by LB essentially calling your book bad.
Props- OPEN THE HANDBAG BEFORE IT COMES OUT! Prism has got to be able to se the lining
Jack, good job trying to open the bag.
Prism 52.13
Jack, black socks, not brown.
Jack 53.2
Leave the rose where it falls, everyone. don't dive across the stage for the flower, because it takes away from the climax
LB, we like the sharp look you gave Jack when he calls you Aunt Augusta
Jack 54.3
We like how you had to shuffle through the books and then flip it right side up, Jack- it makes it more realistic!
Jack 54.8
Girls, be careful of flashing your legs when you jump!
Good job, Grace, at getting the journal out!
Try to bow all toothier, everyone
LB- don't forget to hit the final pose- do not just walk off the stage!!!!!
